What is a US Student Visa?

A US student visa is a type of non-immigrant visa that allows foreign students to study at accredited institutions in the United States. There are two main types:

  • F-1 Visa: For academic studies or language training programs.
  • M-1 Visa: For non-academic or vocational studies.

Note: Most Nigerian students apply for the F-1 visa to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

Requirements for a US Student Visa in Nigeria

Here are the essential US student visa requirements for Nigerians:

1. Valid International Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the US.

2. Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility)

Once admitted, your US school will send you a Form I-20, which confirms your enrollment and allows you to apply for the F-1 visa.

3. DS-160 Form (Non-Immigrant Visa Application)

Complete the DS-160 form online and print the confirmation page with the barcode.

4. Visa Application Fee Receipt

Pay the $185 non-refundable visa application fee (as of 2025) at any designated bank or online and keep the receipt.

5. SEVIS Fee Receipt

Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee (currently $350 for F-1 visa applicants) and print the receipt. SEVIS tracks your stay in the U.S.

6. Passport Photograph

Provide one passport-size photograph (2×2 inches), taken within the last six months. Ensure it meets US visa photo specifications.

7. Proof of Financial Support

You must prove that you or your sponsor can cover your tuition, living expenses, and travel costs. Documents include:

  • Bank statements (last 4–6 months)
  • Sponsorship letters (if applicable)
  • Affidavit of support
  • Scholarship letters or grants (if any)

8. Academic Documents

These include:

  • Admission letter from the US institution
  • WAEC/NECO/GCE results
  • Degree certificates (for postgraduate students)
  • Transcripts
  • Standardized test scores (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, GRE)

9. Visa Interview Appointment Confirmation

After completing the DS-160 form and paying fees, schedule a visa interview at the US Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate in Lagos.
